What bulk email actually costs in 2026

Sending a thousand emails costs between $0.10 and about $1.80 in 2026, depending entirely on which layer you are buying. Raw infrastructure — Amazon SES — is about $0.10 per thousand. Platform plans that include contact storage, unsubscribe handling, and compliance sit between roughly $0.30 and $0.60 per thousand at typical volumes. Low-volume plans with high monthly minimums are the expensive end, because you are paying a fixed fee spread over few messages, not a high unit rate.
The short version
- Cost per thousand falls fast with volume. The headline plan price is a poor comparison unless you divide it by the messages you will actually send.
- Contact-priced plans and volume-priced plans cannot be compared per message at all until you fix a sending frequency.
- Three line items — overage, unsubscribed contacts, and dedicated IPs — account for most surprise invoices.

Cost per thousand, once you divide it out
Plan prices are quoted per month, which hides the number that matters. Divide the plan price by the messages included and the market sorts itself into three tiers straight away. List prices below were read from public pricing pages in September 2026 and are in US dollars.

Two things stand out. The first is that the entry plans are the expensive ones per message — a $15 minimum spread over 10,000 messages is fifteen times the unit price of the same provider's larger tier. If you are near the top of an entry plan, moving up a tier often lowers your bill per message by more than half. The second is that once you are past the minimum, the platform tier clusters tightly between about $0.30 and $0.90 per thousand. That band is what the layer above the infrastructure costs, and it is remarkably consistent across vendors.
Contact pricing does not convert to a unit price
Marketing platforms charge for the list, not the send, so their cost per message depends on how often you mail. The same plan can be the cheapest or the most expensive option on the page depending on a number the pricing page never asks you for.

This is the single most useful calculation in email procurement and almost nobody does it. Work out your real annual send volume, divide the annual plan cost by it, and compare that number against the volume-priced tier above. If you mail your list less than about twice a month, contact pricing is very likely costing you several times what volume pricing would.
The three line items that inflate an invoice
Overage that keeps sending
Most platforms bill overage rather than stopping. That is fine right up until an application bug retries a send loop, or an import doubles a list, and the meter runs all night with nothing to stop it. Ask for the overage rate and the behaviour at the limit before you sign, and if there is a spending cap, set it on day one.
This is a place where we have taken the opposite position and you should know it is a trade-off rather than a pure win. SendKernel plans stop at the limit and tell you instead of charging overage, which means we cannot silently run up a bill, and equally means a campaign can be refused at an inconvenient moment. If uninterrupted sending matters more to you than a predictable invoice, that is a reason to choose a provider with overage rather than one without.
Contacts you are not allowed to email
When a platform counts unsubscribed, bounced, and archived addresses toward the contact limit, you pay for records you must keep and cannot use. Deleting them is not a fix — it is how people get re-imported and mailed again, which produces spam complaints, which is far more expensive than the storage. Check the definition of a billable contact in the billing documentation, not the marketing copy.
Dedicated IPs bought too early
A dedicated IP typically adds $30 to $80 a month and, below roughly 100,000 messages a month, usually makes delivery worse rather than better. Reputation is built from consistent volume; an IP that sends irregularly stays unknown, and unknown is treated with more suspicion than a well-run shared pool. It is worth paying for when your volume is high and steady, and not before.
When building on raw infrastructure is cheaper
Amazon SES at $0.10 per thousand is roughly a quarter of the cheapest platform tier, so the arithmetic looks obvious until you price the layer you have to build. That layer is not one weekend: contact storage, consent records, a permanent suppression list, unsubscribe endpoints that never expire, bounce and complaint processing from a webhook, DKIM key management, per-campaign sending limits, and someone to look at the complaint rate when it moves.

At 100,000 messages a month you are arguing over roughly $22 — less than an hour of engineering time anywhere in the world. The break-even is somewhere north of a million messages a month, and even then only if email is strategically important enough to justify owning it. Below that line, the honest answer is that building it yourself is a preference, not a saving.
Work out your own number in five minutes
1Write down last year's real message count
Not the plan you bought — the messages that actually left. Most teams are surprised by a factor of two in one direction or the other.
2Split it into transactional and marketing
Receipts, resets, and confirmations in one column; campaigns in the other. They are separately billed products nearly everywhere, and mixing them makes every quote wrong.
3Divide each annual cost by each annual volume
You now have a cost per thousand for each half, which is the only number that compares across billing models.
4Add the line items nobody quotes
Overage from the worst month you had, dedicated IP if you pay for one, and the share of your contact limit taken up by people who unsubscribed.
5Compare against the band, not the vendor
A platform tier should land between roughly $0.30 and $0.90 per thousand. Meaningfully above that, you are either on an entry plan you have outgrown or paying for features you do not use.
For reference, our own numbers, so you can place them on the same scale: sending is $18 for 50,000 transactional emails, which is $0.36 per thousand. Marketing is $36 for 5,000 contacts with broadcasts included. Both together is $54. Unsubscribed contacts do not count toward the contact meter, and there is no overage line because plans stop instead.

- Is it cheaper to build on Amazon SES directly?
- In message costs, yes, by roughly four to one. In total cost, only above about a million messages a month. Below that the difference is tens of dollars a month, and you would be spending engineering time on contact storage, suppression, unsubscribe endpoints, bounce processing, and reputation monitoring to capture it.
- Should unsubscribed contacts count toward my plan limit?
- There is no good argument that they should. An unsubscribed address cannot be mailed, and you need to keep it precisely so that it is never mailed again. Billing for it creates an incentive to delete consent history, which is exactly the wrong behaviour. Some platforms count them anyway, so it is worth checking the definition of a billable contact before you commit.
- What is a reasonable cost per thousand emails in 2026?
